Frontal Bone in a Coronal Skull Section, Anterior View

Description

Anteriorly bisected in the coronal plane, the frontal bone forms the superior margin of the face and the anterior cranial vault, with the glabella and superciliary arches centered above the nasion. Laterally, the frontal squama curves toward the frontal processes of the zygomatic bones and the orbital plates that make the roof of each orbit, while inferiorly it meets the nasal bones and the frontal processes of the maxillae at the frontonasal region. Along the internal surface, the midline sulcus for the superior sagittal sinus and adjacent granular foveolae for arachnoid granulations are visible as shallow impressions. Diploë and cortical tables are distinguished on the cut edge. A coronal section through the forehead clarifies what is bone, what is air, and what is neurovascular groove in a way axial CT slices can obscure for novices. Frontal sinus anatomy matters in endoscopic sinus surgery and trauma: the anterior table, posterior table, and frontonasal outflow tract determine whether a fracture can be observed, requires obliteration, or needs cranialization, and the relationship to the anterior cranial fossa explains the risk of cerebrospinal fluid leak.
