Anterior Perspective of the Coronal Section of the Skull

Description

Presented in an anterior perspective through a coronal section of an adult male cranium, the cut face opens the nasal cavity and paranasal region while centering the sphenoid bone (highlighted) deep in the midline skull base. Medial and inferior to the anterior cranial fossa, the sphenoid bridges laterally into the greater wings and pterygoid processes, with the ethmoid and vomer forming septal elements anteriorly. Superiorly the calvaria and frontal bone frame the section, while inferiorly the maxilla with upper dentition and a portion of the mandible establish the relationship of the cranial base to the oral cavity. Midline anatomy is easy to read. This anterior coronal slice is the teaching view for the sphenoid as a junctional bone: it sits posterior to the nasal cavity and superior to the nasopharynx, where small changes in surgical corridor can put the orbit and cavernous sinus region at risk. Endoscopic transsphenoidal approaches to the sella turcica track through this neighborhood, and understanding how the sphenoid relates to the nasal septum, ethmoid complex, and pterygoid plates helps explain complications such as carotid injury or postoperative CSF leak. Sinus disease also lives here. So do anatomic variants.
