Cut through the adult male calvaria in left lateral profile exposes the internal surface of the cranial vault, with the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital components forming the cranial cavity superior to the facial skeleton and mandible. Along the endocranial table, branching grooves for the middle meningeal artery radiate superiorly and posteriorly from the region of the pterion, while finer sulci for venous channels track toward the parietal and occipital areas. Deep to the bone, the brain fills the vault, its cerebral hemispheres conforming to the inner contour, with a dural layer suggested along the inner skull as a pale lining. Spatially, the orbital cavity lies anterior and inferior to the cranial vault, and the zygomatic arch projects laterally beneath the temporal fossa. A lateral cut section like this is the cleanest way to teach how the dura and cranial vault relate to meningeal vessels, because it places the middle meningeal arterial grooves in the same field as the pterion, the thin junction where trauma most often produces an epidural hematoma. The sulcal impressions on the endocranial surface also reinforce how tightly the brain, dura, and inner table are apposed, a practical point when correlating fracture patterns with intracranial bleeding risk in head CT interpretation.
