Description
Cut through the adult male calvaria, this section frames the cranial vault as outer and inner tables of compact bone separated by diploë, with the endocranial surface closely investing the meninges over the cerebral hemispheres. Along the superior aspect, the interdigitating margins of the major cranial sutures are implied, with the sagittal suture at the midline between paired parietal bones and the coronal suture positioned more anteriorly near the frontal bone. Deep to the bony vault, the cerebral cortex presents a folded mantle of gyri and sulci, with the cortical surface following the concavity of the cranial cavity. Orientation reads as an axial (transverse) slice, placing midline structures medial and the convexities of the hemispheres lateral. For teaching and clinical communication, an axial calvarial section clarifies why the skull is not a uniform shell and why hemorrhage patterns respect tissue planes: epidural hematoma tracks between the inner table and periosteal dura, while subdural hematoma collects between dura and arachnoid and can spread across suture lines.
