Description
Presented as a superior view into an opened adult male cranium, the calvaria has been removed to expose the cranial cavity and a sectioned brain. The frontal, parietal, and occipital bones define the rim of the vault, while the supraorbital margins, orbital roofs, nasal cavity, and maxilla with the upper dentition remain visible inferiorly as part of the facial skeleton. Within the cranial vault, the cerebral hemispheres occupy the anterior and middle cranial fossae, their gyri and sulci shown in relation to the inner table of the skull. Midline orientation is suggested by the interhemispheric fissure, with lateral convexities of cortex approaching the temporal and parietal squamae. A removed calvaria is a workhorse perspective for teaching how the skull protects the brain and why intracranial pathology respects compartment boundaries. This angle maps cleanly onto neurosurgical craniotomy planning, where burr holes and bone flaps are placed relative to external bony landmarks but the target lies deep to the dura and cortical surface. It also supports clinical discussions of epidural hematoma from middle meningeal artery injury and subdural hematoma from bridging vein tears, conditions that track along the inner calvaria and differ in their relationship to sutures and dural attachments.
