Description
Sagittal sectioning through an adult male cranium exposes the calvaria and cranial base in profile, with the parietal bone curving superiorly into the occipital squama posteriorly and the frontal bone forming the anterior vault above the nasal cavity and orbit. Deep to the inner table, the cerebrum occupies the supratentorial compartment, its gyri and sulci abutting the dura-lined cranial cavity, while the cerebellum sits posteroinferiorly within the posterior cranial fossa. Inferior to the diencephalon, the brainstem descends in the midline toward the foramen magnum, continuous with the upper cervical spinal cord. Air-filled paranasal sinuses and the nasal passages lie anteroinferior to the frontal lobes, and petrous temporal bone landmarks frame the inner ear region laterally. Spatial orientation matters here because a midline cut clarifies how the anterior cranial fossa, sella region, and posterior fossa stack along the cranial base, a relationship that often gets lost in surface renderings of the skull. Neurosurgical corridors such as the subfrontal approach to anterior skull base lesions, transsphenoidal routes toward the sella, and posterior fossa exposure all depend on appreciating the tight bony confines around the brainstem and cerebellum.
