Lateral Tarsal Artery

Description

Oriented from a medial and slightly inferior viewpoint, the male foot is rendered with the tarsal bones, metatarsals, and phalanges as the deep framework, with color-coded vessels layered superficially and between compartments. The lateral tarsal artery is traced as a branch arising from the dorsalis pedis artery near the neck of the talus, then coursing laterally across the dorsum of the tarsus toward the calcaneus and cuboid region, in close relationship to the talonavicular joint line. Adjacent arterial branches on the dorsum, dorsal venous channels, and fine neural elements are included to clarify how the artery sits between bone landmarks and soft-tissue planes. Spatially, the vessel runs distal to the ankle mortise and superior to the plantar structures, crossing the midfoot toward the lateral column. For teaching and clinical correlation, this projection helps connect surface anatomy of the dorsalis pedis pulse to its key branch pattern over the tarsus, where small-vessel injury can matter out of proportion to size. Lacerations or crush trauma over the dorsolateral midfoot, midtarsal (Chopart) dislocations, and dorsal approaches for talonavicular or calcaneocuboid procedures can all place the lateral tarsal artery at risk, and collateral flow between dorsal and plantar arterial networks becomes the practical question.
