Description
Scarpa’s fascia is presented as the membranous layer of the superficial fascia of the male anterior abdominal wall, positioned deep to Camper’s fatty layer and superficial to the deep (investing) fascia over the rectus abdominis, external oblique, and their epimysium. Superiorly it blends into the superficial fascia of the thorax, while inferiorly it thickens and becomes more distinct as it approaches the pubic symphysis and inguinal region. Medially it spans the linea alba and overlies the rectus sheath, and laterally it follows the curvature of the flank toward the iliac crest and anterior superior iliac spine. Understanding Scarpa’s fascia matters when you need to predict how fluid moves in the superficial tissues. Urine extravasation after rupture of the spongy (bulbar) urethra tracks into the superficial perineal pouch and can ascend into the lower anterior abdominal wall deep to Scarpa’s fascia, but it is limited inferiorly by its attachment and continuity with Colles’ fascia and the fascia lata. This layer also guides incision planning: a low transverse (Pfannenstiel) approach relies on clean dissection planes between superficial fascia, rectus sheath, and underlying muscle to reduce dead space and seroma formation.
