Description
Layered fascia envelops the male body as a continuous connective tissue network, with superficial fascia in the subcutaneous plane and deep fascia investing the limbs and trunk. Epimysium wraps individual skeletal muscles, then blends into perimysium and endomysium to partition fascicles and fibers, continuing proximally and distally into aponeuroses and tendons that anchor to periosteum. Along the extremities, the deep fascia thickens into regional expansions such as the fascia lata and brachial fascia, creating intermuscular septa that separate anterior and posterior compartments, while in the trunk it forms broad sheets that contour the thoracic wall and abdominal musculature. Medial and lateral fascial planes define natural cleavage lines around neurovascular bundles. Fascial continuity is the surgical map for dissection. Cleanly finding the correct plane between deep fascia and epimysium reduces bleeding and preserves perforating vessels during flap elevation, and it also explains why infections can track along fascia to produce necrotizing fasciitis with pain out of proportion to skin findings. Compartment boundaries matter too, because edema or hemorrhage constrained by dense deep fascia can raise intracompartmental pressure and threaten limb perfusion in acute compartment syndrome. Palpable thickening at retinacula and aponeurotic bands offers a direct anatomical basis for entrapment patterns such as carpal tunnel syndrome and tarsal tunnel syndrome.
