Pectoral Fascia

Description

Spanning the anterior thoracic wall, the pectoral fascia forms a dense sheet of deep connective tissue closely adherent to the superficial surface of pectoralis major, functioning as its epimysium and blending at the muscle margins with adjacent fascia. Medially it approaches the parasternal region over the sternum and costal cartilages, while laterally it thickens toward the anterior axillary fold and continues into the axillary fascia near the humeral insertion of pectoralis major. Superiorly it relates to the clavicular head and the deltopectoral interval, and inferiorly it transitions toward the superficial fascia of the upper abdominal wall along the costal attachments. Understanding the pectoral fascia matters when you need clean planes in anterior chest dissection or surgery, because it defines the superficial boundary of pectoralis major and the approach to the axilla.
