Description

Medial rotation of the foot brings the talar head into profile, centering the navicular articular surface as a smooth, convex facet on the anterior aspect of the talus. Just posterior to it, the talar neck narrows toward the body, while inferiorly the contour drops toward the subtalar region; superiorly, the trochlear surface sits back on the dome, separated from the head by the neck’s gentle waist. Along the medial margin, the facet’s rim reads as a clean arc, oriented anteromedially and slightly plantarly toward the medial longitudinal arch. This is the talus-to-navicular half of the talonavicular joint, the anterior component of the transverse tarsal (Chopart) joint that clinicians assess when evaluating midfoot mobility and hindfoot alignment. Subtle changes in the talar head’s contour and its articular coverage relate directly to talonavicular subluxation patterns seen in adult acquired flatfoot (often with posterior tibial tendon dysfunction) and to coalition-related restriction that shifts motion to adjacent joints. Animation helps because you can track the facet’s curvature as the viewpoint settles on the medial edge, clarifying how a seemingly simple “surface” is a three-dimensional convexity that guides gliding and rotation under load. Small surface. Big consequences. Use it in gross anatomy and orthopaedic teaching when introducing tarsal articulations, in podiatry and physical therapy modules on pronation-supination mechanics, or as a surgical anatomy insert for discussions of talonavicular arthrodesis, hindfoot reconstruction, and preoperative CT-based joint surface assessment. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
