Description
Shown on a male body in anatomical position, the cutaneous nerve map divides the skin into color fields consistent with major sensory territories: trigeminal distributions across the face, cervical plexus branches over the lateral neck and shoulder, and intercostal nerves arranged in segmental bands across the thorax and abdominal wall. Along the upper limb, distinct regions correspond to axillary nerve over the deltoid “regimental badge,” musculocutaneous over the lateral forearm, radial over the dorsolateral hand, median across the palmar thumb to radial half of the ring finger, and ulnar on the medial hand and little finger. Over the lower limb, territories align with lateral femoral cutaneous on the anterolateral thigh, femoral and saphenous on the anterior and medial leg, superficial fibular on the dorsum of the foot, deep fibular in the first dorsal web space, sural along the posterolateral calf and lateral foot, and tibial on the plantar surface. Clear boundaries. Useful landmarks. Such a distribution chart matters when you need to localize a lesion by sensory loss pattern and decide whether the deficit tracks a peripheral nerve, a plexus element, or a spinal root dermatome. Clinically, the distinction between median nerve compression in carpal tunnel syndrome and C6 radiculopathy often turns on whether paresthesia includes the thenar eminence (palmar cutaneous branch spared in carpal tunnel) and whether symptoms respect a dermatomal stripe versus a named nerve territory. The same logic supports evaluation of meralgia paresthetica (lateral femoral cutaneous entrapment near the anterior superior iliac spine) and iatrogenic saphenous neuropathy after knee surgery. Ideal for teaching cutaneous innervation in gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, and physical diagnosis courses, and for illustrating sensory exam documentation in clinical skills manuals, neurology texts, and patient education handouts for neuropathy and radiculopathy workups.
