Description
Shown in right lateral profile, the male body surface is partitioned into color-coded dermatomes representing segmental cutaneous innervation from cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral spinal nerve roots. Cervical dermatomes wrap the posterolateral neck, shoulder, and upper limb, while thoracic bands run in a near-horizontal pattern across the trunk, with lumbar and sacral territories sweeping over the buttock, thigh, leg, and foot. In the limb, the segments spiral from proximal to distal, so adjacent colors do not always align as simple stripes. Midline boundaries are implied, since dermatomes meet their contralateral counterparts at the anterior and posterior median lines. A lateral dermatome map matters when you need to localize a sensory complaint to a nerve root rather than a peripheral nerve, and the profile view clarifies the transition zones over the shoulder cap, lateral hip, and lateral calf where confusion is common. Think shingles: a unilateral, painful vesicular eruption limited to a single thoracic dermatome, classically respecting the midline.
