Description
Centered on the oral fissure, the orbicularis oris forms a continuous muscular ring within the upper and lower lips, encircling the vermilion and meeting laterally at the oral commissures. Superiorly it blends with fibers of the levator labii superioris and zygomaticus muscles, while inferiorly it interdigitates with depressor anguli oris and depressor labii inferioris, creating the modiolus as a dense convergence point. Deep to the muscle, the maxilla and mandible frame the dental arches and anterior nasal aperture, and the illustration’s translucent soft tissues allow the relationship between lip musculature and underlying facial skeleton to read cleanly in anterior anatomical position.
