Description
Petrosquamous fissure (petrosquamous suture) is highlighted along the lateral aspect of the temporal bone as a thin cleft marking the junction between the squamous part superiorly and the petrous part posteromedially. From this fixed lateral perspective, the line sits posterior to the zygomatic process and mandibular fossa, approaching the region of the external acoustic meatus and the mastoid portion inferiorly. Its oblique course helps orient the viewer to how the dense petrous pyramid underlies the flatter squama within the lateral skull. Otolaryngologists and skull base surgeons care about this boundary because a persistent or widened petrosquamous fissure can transmit emissary veins, classically the petrosquamous sinus, and can alter the venous anatomy encountered during mastoidectomy or temporal craniotomy. On high resolution CT of the temporal bone, the fissure or an unfused suture line may mimic a nondisplaced temporal bone fracture, so appreciating its typical location relative to the external acoustic meatus and the mastoid region prevents false positive trauma reads. Small detail matters here. The crisp separation between parts supports teaching of temporal bone morphology without distracting deep inner ear structures.
