Description
Petrosquamous fissure anatomy is featured along the junction of the squamous part of the temporal bone laterally and the petrous part medially, presented from an anterior skull perspective. The seam tracks superior to the external acoustic meatus and posterior to the root of the zygomatic process, approaching the region of the mandibular fossa and articular tubercle inferiorly. Medially, the dense petrous portion forms a sharp ridge toward the middle cranial fossa, while the thinner squamous plate fans laterally into the temporal fossa. A small seam with outsized relevance. Otologic surgeons and skull base teams care about this line because it marks a developmental interface that may remain patent as a petrosquamous suture and can transmit venous channels (including a persistent petrosquamosal sinus) that become relevant in temporal bone surgery and on CT.
