Description
Arising from the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus, the posterior meniscofemoral ligament (ligament of Wrisberg) ascends obliquely superiorly and medially to reach the lateral surface of the medial femoral condyle within the intercondylar notch. From this posterior perspective, it tracks immediately adjacent to the posterior cruciate ligament, typically coursing posterior to the PCL before blending near its femoral attachment. Inferiorly, the tibial plateau and fibular head sit distal to the femoral condyles, while the blue menisci bracket the intercondylar region between the articular cartilage surfaces. This relationship matters in both imaging and arthroscopy because the posterior meniscofemoral ligament can be mistaken for a duplicated bundle of the PCL or for a displaced meniscal fragment, especially when the ligament is prominent. Confusion here changes reports and operative decisions. Orthopedic surgeons also use the meniscofemoral ligaments as functional secondary stabilizers of the lateral meniscus and posterior tibial translation, a point that becomes concrete when evaluating PCL insufficiency or planning PCL reconstruction tunnels and graft placement.
