Description
Prominent haustra and taeniae coli define the external contour of the large intestine in this illustration, with a segment opened in cross-section to expose the luminal mucosa. Multiple benign-appearing polyps project from the mucosal surface as rounded, sessile and short-stalked excrescences, scattered along the bowel wall rather than confined to a single fold. Inferiorly, the cecal region is identifiable by the attached vermiform appendix, extending from the posteromedial aspect of the cecum in anatomical position. Mucosal rugae and the underlying muscularis are suggested within the cut section, contrasting with the smoother serosal surface externally. Multiple colonic polyps are a teaching cornerstone because management hinges on morphology, distribution, and patient context, even before histology is known. A diffuse polyp burden raises the pretest probability of adenomatous change and inherited syndromes (for example familial adenomatous polyposis or MUTYH-associated polyposis), while clustered left-sided lesions steer the conversation toward targeted colonoscopy, polypectomy strategy, and surveillance intervals. Small lesions can still matter. The cross-sectional exposure helps connect gross appearance to where dysplasia begins, the mucosa, and why deep submucosal invasion changes endoscopic resectability and staging.
