Positioned along the posterior aspect of the ascending colon, the right colic vein is traced as a tributary running within the right mesocolon and draining medially toward the superior mesenteric vein. The haustrated wall of the colon, its taeniae coli, and scattered omental (epiploic) appendices form the superficial landmarks, while the venous arcades sit deeper, close to the retroperitoneal posterior abdominal wall. Superiorly, venous channels course toward the transverse colon, and inferiorly they approach the cecal region, maintaining the typical right-sided colonic drainage pattern in the male abdomen. Posterior viewing matters because right colic venous anatomy is encountered at the plane where surgeons mobilize the right colon off the retroperitoneum. Small variations in the presence, caliber, and confluence of the right colic vein with the middle colic vein or ileocolic vein can complicate central vascular ligation during oncologic right hemicolectomy and increase the risk of bleeding near the superior mesenteric vessels.
