Description
Posteriorly, the transverse colon and ascending colon are presented with their haustra, teniae coli, and appendices epiploicae, with the cecum and vermiform appendix positioned inferiorly in the right iliac fossa region and the rectum continuing inferiorly toward the anal canal. Along the mesocolic attachment, the middle colic artery courses within the transverse mesocolon, while the right colic and ileocolic arteries track toward the ascending colon and cecum, respectively. A dense perivascular nerve plexus invests these vessels, forming a fine network that runs parallel to the arterial trunks and follows their branches into the colonic wall. This posterior angle is the one you want when teaching autonomic innervation of the midgut and proximal hindgut because it frames the colic vasculature as a roadmap for the superior mesenteric plexus and its periarterial extensions. It also maps cleanly onto operative planes: during right hemicolectomy or extended right colectomy with central vascular ligation, dissection proceeds along the ileocolic and middle colic pedicles where sympathetic fibers and visceral afferents cluster. Expect traction-related or thermal injury here to contribute to postoperative dysmotility and altered visceral sensation, a point that is hard to convey without a perivascular view. Use this plate in gross anatomy and GI surgery teaching to correlate teniae coli, haustration, and the appendix with the vascular pedicles and their accompanying nerve network, or in a colorectal oncology atlas to support discussions of lymphovascular and neurovascular anatomy around the SMA branches.
