Description
Posterior abdominal anatomy frames the paired middle suprarenal arteries as short lateral branches arising from the abdominal aorta near the origin of the celiac trunk and superior mesenteric artery, then coursing laterally and slightly superiorly toward the medial aspects of the suprarenal (adrenal) glands. Each vessel approaches the gland superior to the renal hilum, with the kidneys lying inferior and slightly lateral, and the vertebral column forming the midline posterior backdrop. The inferior vena cava runs to the right of the aorta, and the diaphragmatic crura and posterior surface of the liver sit superiorly, with portions of the lower lungs visible at the top margin. Emphasis on the middle suprarenal arteries helps clarify the adrenal’s tripartite arterial supply (superior suprarenal from the inferior phrenic artery, middle suprarenal from the aorta, and inferior suprarenal from the renal artery) and why arterial patterns vary between sides.
