Description
Running superficially across the lateral cheek, the risorius is shown extending in a near horizontal course from the parotid and masseteric fascia toward the modiolus at the angle of the mouth. Medial to it, the orbicularis oris encircles the oral aperture, while the zygomaticus major (highlighted) descends inferomedially from the zygomatic bone to blend at the same modiolus region. Superiorly, fibers of orbicularis oculi ring the palpebral fissure and the frontalis occupies the forehead. Symmetry is maintained across the midline. Appreciating the risorius in an anterior view matters because its insertion into the modiolus places it at a convergence point for multiple perioral muscles, so small changes in tone can shift the oral commissure and alter smile dynamics. This is the anatomy you reference when explaining asymmetry after facial nerve (CN VII) palsy, where buccal branch dysfunction reduces lateral retraction of the mouth corner, or when planning chemodenervation patterns for hyperactive perioral musculature. Modiolus anatomy is a surgical landmark. It also helps clarify why the risorius is variable and can be confused with slips of platysma or zygomaticus minor in dissection. Suitable for head and neck anatomy teaching in medical and dental curricula, this frontal plate also supports facial reanimation, rhytidectomy, and reconstructive planning discussions where the zygomaticus major and risorius interplay determines commissure position. Medical publishers can pair it with text on muscles of facial expression, the SMAS, and CN VII branching patterns in the cheek. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
