Description
Seen from the medial aspect, the scapula presents its costal (anterior) surface, dominated by the broad subscapular fossa bordered by the medial (vertebral) border and the lateral (axillary) border. Superiorly, the superior border leads toward the base of the coracoid process, while laterally the glenoid cavity sits at the expanded lateral angle, oriented to receive the humeral head. The acromion is positioned superolaterally as a continuation of the scapular spine, though its contour is appreciated mainly at the lateral edge from this vantage. Broad muscle bed. Reading the scapula medially matters when you are teaching scapulothoracic mechanics and the way the bone glides over the posterior thoracic wall, because the subscapular fossa is the origin surface for subscapularis and the interface for scapular protraction, retraction, and upward rotation. This orientation also supports clinical discussions of anterior shoulder stability: subscapularis and the anterior capsule sit anterior to the glenohumeral joint, and their failure patterns help explain recurrent anterior dislocation and Bankart-type labral injury. For surgeons, recognizing the relationship between the coracoid base, the glenoid rim, and the scapular neck frames coracoid transfer concepts (Latarjet) and safe zones around the suprascapular notch during arthroscopic work. Useful in upper limb anatomy courses, orthopaedic and sports medicine teaching files, and textbook figures that need a clean medial or costal-surface reference for muscle attachments, including subscapularis, serratus anterior along the medial border, and the short head of biceps and coracobrachialis via the coracoid.
