Description
Lesser wing (ala minor) of the sphenoid is featured with its thin triangular plate projecting laterally from the sphenoid body, forming the posterior part of the orbital roof and the posterior margin of the anterior cranial fossa. Medially, the lesser wing roots into the sphenoid body around the optic canal, with the anterior clinoid process extending posteriorly and slightly medially as a pointed projection that overhangs the parasellar region. A sharp superior border demarcates the anterior cranial fossa from the orbit, while the inferior surface contributes to the superior orbital fissure region at the junction with the greater wing. Bone detail matters here. The anterior clinoid process is a practical landmark in skull base anatomy because it relates directly to the optic nerve within the optic canal and to the internal carotid artery as it passes medial and inferior to the clinoid in the cavernous and clinoid segments. Clinicians encounter this region in anterior clinoidectomy for paraclinoid aneurysms, optic nerve decompression, and approaches to tuberculum sellae and planum sphenoidale meningiomas, where a few millimeters of bony anatomy can determine safe corridors.
