Seen in lateral profile, the vertebral column is arranged as a continuous osseous chain from the upper cervical vertebrae (C1 to C7) through the thoracic (T1 to T12) and lumbar segments (L1 to L5), tapering inferiorly into the sacrum and coccyx. Alternating vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs create the stepped anterior contour, while the posterior margin traces the line of the vertebral arches and spinous processes. The normal sagittal curvatures are evident, with cervical and lumbar lordosis separated by thoracic kyphosis, and the sacrum forming a fixed kyphotic base within the pelvis. Disc spaces appear as pale intervals between adjacent vertebral endplates.
