Description
Lateral soft tissue anatomy of the male anterior neck is centered on the sternothyroid muscles, shown as short, broad strap muscles running superiorly from the posterior surface of the manubrium and first costal cartilage toward the oblique line of the thyroid cartilage. Their fibers lie deep to the platysma and partially deep to the sternocleidomastoid, with the sternohyoid positioned more superficial and medial, and the omohyoid crossing the lower neck more laterally. Superiorly, the sternothyroid approaches the laryngeal framework, where the thyroid cartilage sits anterior to the laryngeal cavity and superior to the cricoid. Layering is clear. Functionally, sternothyroid acts as a laryngeal depressor, drawing the thyroid cartilage inferiorly after swallowing and during phonation, and it becomes a practical landmark when you teach the infrahyoid compartment as a set of strap muscles with distinct attachments and actions. Surgeons routinely split or retract these muscles in midline approaches for thyroidectomy, tracheostomy, and laryngeal exposure, so a lateral view that preserves their fiber direction helps clarify what is cut versus what is simply retracted. Strap muscle handling affects postoperative discomfort and can complicate reoperative thyroid surgery when scar tissue obscures the normal planes. Clean planes matter.
