Description
Arising from the medial surface of the styloid process of the temporal bone, the stylopharyngeus descends inferomedially in a sagittal section of the male head and neck toward the lateral wall of the pharynx. Its belly courses posterior to the mandible and tongue base and approaches the pharyngeal constrictor curtain, slipping between the superior and middle pharyngeal constrictor muscles before fanning into the pharyngeal wall. Superiorly and anteriorly, the nasal cavity, maxilla, and orbit provide bony orientation, while inferiorly the hyoid bone and laryngeal framework sit anterior to the pharynx. Clean midline anatomy. Functionally, stylopharyngeus is the key longitudinal pharyngeal elevator, working with palatopharyngeus and salpingopharyngeus to elevate and shorten the pharynx during swallowing while the constrictors propagate the bolus. Its anatomic pathway also matters because it is the only pharyngeal muscle innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX), a useful discriminator when teaching pharyngeal plexus anatomy and when localizing dysphagia associated with jugular foramen lesions or postoperative skull base neuropathies. The gap between the superior and middle constrictors is a consistent landmark for understanding how the longitudinal muscles interdigitate with the constrictor layers. Use this sagittal head and neck plate in gross anatomy and neuroanatomy courses to anchor discussions of pharyngeal musculature, CN IX motor supply, and coordinated laryngeal elevation during deglutition, and in otolaryngology teaching files to support explanations of dysphagia workup and skull base pathology.
