Description
Running anteroinferiorly from the region of the cartilaginous pharyngotympanic (auditory) tube toward the soft palate, the levator veli palatini is traced in sagittal section as it passes medial to the mandibular ramus and posterior to the hard palate. Its belly lies superior to the superior pharyngeal constrictor and inferior to the skull base, approaching the palatine aponeurosis near the posterior edge of the palatine bone. Surrounding landmarks in this lateral head and neck section logically include the nasal cavity, nasopharyngeal lumen, sphenoid and occipital bones, the body of the hyoid, laryngeal cartilages, and the upper cervical vertebrae. Functionally, levator veli palatini elevates the soft palate during swallowing and speech to help achieve velopharyngeal closure, separating the nasopharynx from the oropharynx. That relationship to the superior constrictor matters in cleft palate repair and in velopharyngeal insufficiency, where anatomic understanding guides palatoplasty planning and interpretation of hypernasal resonance. Eustachian tube dysfunction also tracks here, since the muscle’s proximal attachment near the tube explains why palatal muscle anomalies can correlate with middle ear effusion. Short, thick, and easy to misidentify.
