Description
Seen from a posterior, slightly superior vantage, the paired cerebral hemispheres are rendered with clear gyral relief, with the sulcus postcentralis traced as a longitudinal groove in the parietal lobe running parallel and immediately posterior to the sulcus centralis. Medially, the midline interhemispheric fissure separates the hemispheres, while laterally the postcentral region curves toward the lateral convexity. Inferior in the frame, the cerebellar hemispheres and vermis sit beneath the occipital poles, their folia forming tighter, transverse folds than the cerebral gyri. Anatomically, the sulcus postcentralis is a practical landmark for parsing the postcentral gyrus (primary somatosensory cortex, BA 3, 1, 2) from the superior and inferior parietal lobules on the convexity. It matters when you are teaching or planning around lesions that blur functional borders, for example a parasagittal meningioma or cortical contusion that displaces the central sulcus and makes the precentral and postcentral gyri hard to distinguish by inspection alone. Blue surface markings read well as didactic callouts for sulcal identification and for orienting the sensory homunculus relative to the midline, where lower limb representation lies closest to the interhemispheric fissure.
