Description
Seen from a medial perspective, the superficial branch of the radial nerve is traced in the proximal forearm as it separates from the deep branch near the elbow, then courses distally toward the dorsolateral hand as a primarily cutaneous nerve. The division is shown in relationship to the lateral epicondyle region and the mobile muscle mass of the proximal forearm, where the deep branch turns into the supinator to become the posterior interosseous nerve. Distally, the superficial radial nerve runs toward the radial styloid and fans into dorsal digital branches over the thumb and radial two to three digits, traveling close to the radial artery and superficial veins. Medial viewing clarifies a common point of confusion for learners: the radial nerve’s terminal branching happens around the elbow even though the sensory territory you test is on the dorsum of the hand. It also puts the superficial branch in the context of its classic entrapment site beneath the brachioradialis in the distal forearm (Wartenberg syndrome), where paresthesia over the dorsal radial hand can be provoked by pronation, ulnar deviation, or tight wristwear. No motor deficit should accompany that sensory complaint. That contrast with posterior interosseous neuropathy is the teaching point.
