Description
Arising from the anterior aspect of the femoral artery just inferior to the inguinal ligament, the superficial circumflex iliac artery runs laterally and slightly superiorly toward the anterior superior iliac spine, tracking parallel to the groin crease. Rectus abdominis lies medially, while the external oblique aponeurosis and the proximal fibers of tensor fasciae latae sit more laterally; the vessel courses superficially over the fascia lata and toward the iliac crest. Proximal quadriceps contours and the adductor compartment define the anteromedial thigh beneath the vascular plane. Orientation is unambiguous. That lateral superficial trajectory is the point. Surgeons encounter this artery during groin incisions for femoral hernia repair, saphenofemoral junction exposure, and femoral arterial access, where an unrecognized branch can be a tidy source of postoperative hematoma. The same vessel becomes a practical landmark in flap planning, contributing perforators to groin and lower abdominal skin, and it can be confused with the superficial epigastric artery unless you attend to its course toward the ASIS. Use it for teaching anterior abdominal wall and femoral triangle surface anatomy in gross anatomy, surgical anatomy, and vascular access modules, or as a figure in operative technique chapters covering inguinal approaches and groin lymph node dissection. It also suits radiology and ultrasound curricula when correlating superficial groin vasculature with procedural planning for catheterization or regional blocks.
