Description
Across the anterolateral lower abdominal wall and proximal thigh, the superficial iliac circumflex vein tracks roughly parallel to the inguinal ligament as it curves laterally toward the anterior superior iliac spine. Medially, it converges toward the saphenofemoral junction, joining the great saphenous vein just inferior to the inguinal crease, superficial to the fascia lata and anterior to the femoral vein and artery within the femoral triangle. Rectus abdominis and the external oblique aponeurosis frame the superior field, while the sartorius crosses obliquely over the anterior thigh, with quadriceps and adductor compartments providing deeper muscular landmarks. This anterior perspective matters because the superficial iliac circumflex vein is one of the consistent tributaries encountered during groin exposure, and it often requires controlled ligation when approaching the great saphenous vein for varicose vein surgery, endovenous procedures, or open saphenofemoral junction work. Expect anatomic variation. Inadequate recognition of these superficial tributaries can contribute to bleeding, hematoma, or persistent reflux channels after treatment, and the relationship to the femoral vessels helps orient learners to safe dissection planes.
