Description
Running superficially across the anterolateral groin, the superficial iliac circumflex vein tracks parallel and slightly inferior to the inguinal fold as it courses laterally toward the anterior superior iliac spine. Medially, it converges with the superficial epigastric and superficial external pudendal veins before draining into the great saphenous vein at the saphenofemoral junction, just inferior to the inguinal ligament. Surrounding context in this anterior male torso model includes the inferior vena cava and major systemic vessels of the trunk, with upper limb arteries and veins rendered for orientation. Clinically, this vein sits in the same superficial fascial plane traversed during femoral access and open groin dissections, where unexpected bleeding and postoperative lymphatic leak can complicate exposure of the femoral triangle. Its close relationship to the great saphenous vein makes it a familiar tributary during saphenous cutdown, varicose vein surgery, and ultrasound mapping for venous insufficiency, and it helps define the superficial venous territory that can transmit infection or thrombophlebitis across the lower abdominal wall toward the hip. The parallel course to the inguinal crease is also a practical surface cue when planning incisions and avoiding unnecessary avulsion in subcutaneous flaps. Ideal for teaching inguinal and proximal thigh venous anatomy in gross anatomy, surgical anatomy, and vascular ultrasound modules, and for illustrating femoral exposure in operative textbooks, access-device training materials, or patient-facing diagrams discussing groin bruising after catheterization.
