Description
Oriented to the posterior (dorsal) aspect of an adult male hand, the superficial palmar venous arch is traced in blue across the distal palm, just deep to the palmar aponeurosis yet represented here in relation to dorsal landmarks for spatial orientation. Proximally, venules from the digits converge toward the metacarpal region and communicate with the dorsal venous network, while more proximal outflow aligns toward the radial and ulnar sides of the wrist. Extensor digitorum and extensor indicis tendons course longitudinally over the metacarpals on the dorsal surface, contrasted against the more volar location of the superficial palmar veins. Small branches cross obliquely. Clinical teaching often struggles with the fact that dorsal views dominate surface anatomy, while venous access and compression hazards frequently involve palmar structures.
