Seen in lateral profile, the T5 vertebra sits within the mid thoracic kyphosis, with the vertebral body positioned anterior to the vertebral arch and spinous process. Superior and inferior endplates frame the intervertebral discs, while the pedicles and laminae form the posterior boundary of the vertebral foramen. Along the posterolateral body margin, the superior and inferior costal demifacets mark the articulation sites for the head of the fifth rib, and the transverse process carries the transverse costal facet for the rib tubercle. Clear thoracic anatomy. This side view matters because T5 is a representative thoracic segment where rib articulations constrain motion and shift load transfer compared with the cervical or lumbar spine. Many thoracic compression fractures involve the vertebral body with relative sparing of the posterior elements, so aligning the anterior body height, endplate contour, and disc spaces in profile mirrors what you assess on a lateral radiograph or sagittal CT/MR. Costovertebral and costotransverse joints also enter the differential in posterior thoracic pain and can complicate posterior approaches when placing pedicle screws at mid thoracic levels.
