Description
Temporal squama forms the broad, thin plate of bone on the posterolateral cranium, positioned superior to the mastoid region and continuous inferiorly with the thicker mastoid portion of the temporal bone. From a posterior viewpoint, the squamous part appears as a gently convex sheet that meets the parietal bone superiorly along the squamosal suture, while the mastoid region projects inferoposteriorly as the mastoid process. The posterior margin approaches the occipitomastoid suture, and the surface topography often suggests the supramastoid crest near the junction of squamous and mastoid portions, a useful external landmark for the mastoid antrum. Mastoid anatomy matters clinically because infection can spread from the middle ear into mastoid air cells, and surgical drainage or mastoidectomy relies on surface landmarks that are read from outside the skull. Fracture patterns also track through thin bone, and a squamous temporal bone fracture can extend toward the mastoid region with concern for the external acoustic meatus, tympanomastoid fissure, and adjacent vascular channels. Orientation is everything. The fixed posterior perspective helps you appreciate how rapidly the squamous plate transitions into the dense mastoid buttress, clarifying why drilling trajectories and burr-hole placement are planned with respect to the supramastoid crest and the expected course of the sigmoid sinus deep to the mastoid.
