Description
Seen in lateral cross section, the male thyroid cartilage forms the anterior and lateral walls of the laryngeal framework, its paired laminae meeting anteromedially to create the laryngeal prominence (Adam’s apple). Superiorly, the thyroid notch and superior horns (cornua) rise toward the hyoid region, while the inferior border approaches the cricoid cartilage below at the level of the cricothyroid joint. Posterior to the thyroid lamina, the arytenoid cartilages sit on the superior rim of the cricoid, with the corniculate cartilages capping their apices, and the epiglottis occupies the supraglottic space anterosuperior to the laryngeal inlet. Vocal folds are shown as paired mucosal ridges extending from the thyroid angle anteriorly toward the vocal processes of the arytenoids posteriorly. For teaching phonation mechanics, a lateral section like this makes the relationships between the thyroid cartilage, cricoid, and arytenoids easier to grasp than an external view. Rotation at the cricothyroid joint tilts the thyroid cartilage relative to the cricoid, lengthening and tensing the vocal folds, a key concept in pitch control and in cricothyroid muscle function. Airway access matters too. The cricothyroid membrane lies immediately inferior to the thyroid cartilage and superior to the cricoid, and its surface landmarks depend on recognizing the thyroid laminae and laryngeal prominence, which are often more pronounced in the adult male. Suitable for gross anatomy and head and neck modules, otolaryngology teaching files, and surgical education covering cricothyrotomy, laryngeal trauma, or framework surgery such as thyroplasty and arytenoid procedures, where cartilage geometry dictates implant position and endolaryngeal effect.
