Description
Presented in posterior anatomical position, the right triceps brachii is highlighted beneath intact skin and superficial fascia, forming the dominant contour of the posterior upper arm from the posterior axillary fold down to the olecranon. Proximally, the long head tracks inferior to the posterior deltoid and along the lateral border of the scapula toward the infraglenoid tubercle, while the lateral and medial heads occupy the posterior surface of the humeral shaft, flanking the region of the radial (spiral) groove. Adjacent posterior shoulder and back musculature remains visible in neutral tones, including trapezius superiorly and latissimus dorsi and teres major inferolaterally, framing the arm against the thorax. Surface anatomy matters here. This posterior, under-the-skin presentation supports teaching and clinical communication because elbow extension strength and posterior arm contour depend on the triceps tendon unit converging to the olecranon, a site of both tendinopathy and acute rupture after a fall on an outstretched hand. Orthopaedic exposures to the distal humerus and olecranon, as well as posterior approaches for humeral shaft fixation, rely on anticipating the relationship between the triceps heads and the course of the radial nerve in the spiral groove, a pattern implicated in wrist drop after midshaft fractures. The long head also contributes to the posterior axillary fold, a useful landmark during shoulder and axillary examinations.
