Description
Seen from a posterior angle, the lateral head of triceps brachii occupies the posterolateral compartment of the upper arm, arising from the posterior surface of the humerus superior to the radial (spiral) groove and tapering distally toward the common triceps tendon. Medial to it, the long head would be expected to form the more medial posterior contour as it descends from the infraglenoid tubercle of the scapula, while the medial head lies deep and contributes less to the surface profile. Distally, the muscle mass converges superior to the olecranon of the ulna, with the lateral head forming the prominent lateral border of the triceps silhouette. Clear landmarks. Posterior views of the lateral head matter because they clarify the three-head architecture that students often flatten into a single posterior arm mass, and they reinforce where fascial planes guide surgical exposure. This perspective also tracks closely with the course of the radial nerve in the radial groove, a relationship central to humeral shaft fracture patterns and to posterior approaches to the humerus, where dissection between triceps heads helps reduce iatrogenic nerve injury. Use this artwork in upper limb gross anatomy labs, orthopaedic and sports medicine teaching on posterior arm pain and weakness, and atlas plates explaining triceps tendon anatomy and injection or operative corridors around the distal humerus and elbow. It also suits patient education materials on triceps strains and postoperative rehabilitation that need an accurate posterior surface map. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
