Description
Beneath a translucent posterior skin layer, the triceps brachii dominates the back of the male upper arm, with the long head positioned medially and arising from the infraglenoid tubercle, the lateral head occupying the posterolateral humeral shaft, and the medial head filling the deep, distal half of the posterior humeral surface. Distally, the three heads converge into a common triceps tendon that inserts on the olecranon of the ulna, immediately posterior to the elbow joint line. Along the lateral border of the distal arm, the interval between triceps and the forearm extensor mass suggests the path of the radial nerve and profunda brachii artery within the radial groove. Orientation is clear. Posterior is posterior. Posterior triceps anatomy matters because it is where you teach elbow extension as a coordinated myotendinous unit rather than a single belly, and where clinicians correlate weakness patterns with radial nerve lesions. Trauma to the midshaft humerus often injures the nerve in the spiral (radial) groove, producing impaired wrist and finger extension while leaving some triceps function intact, a pattern explained by proximal branch points to the long and lateral heads. The distal tendon and olecranon insertion also frame discussions of triceps tendinopathy and rupture, and they serve as palpable landmarks during posterior elbow approaches and olecranon fixation.
