Description
Arising from the posterior surface of the humerus superior to the sulcus for the radial nerve, the lateral head of the triceps brachii forms the posterolateral contour of the upper arm and converges distally toward the common triceps tendon. In this posterior perspective with the elbow flexed, the lateral head sits lateral to the long head, which descends from the infraglenoid tubercle and frames the medial border of the triceps mass. Distally, the tendon courses to the olecranon of the ulna, while the posterior forearm extensor compartment and the dorsal tendons toward the wrist and hand remain visible in gray as context. Clear separation of muscle belly versus tendon is emphasized. Posterior views that isolate the lateral head matter when you need to teach, or operate around, the interval between triceps heads where the radial nerve and profunda brachii artery travel in the radial groove. This is the zone at risk in midshaft humeral fractures and during posterior or posterolateral humeral approaches, where retraction or hardware placement can injure the nerve and leave patients with wrist drop. The flexed-elbow position also clarifies how the fleshy portion of the lateral head contributes to elbow extension torque through the shared insertion on the olecranon.
