Description
Running along the posterior-medial aspect of the upper arm, the medial head of the triceps brachii is shown deep to the more superficial long and lateral heads, hugging the shaft of the humerus from the spiral groove region toward the distal arm. Proximally, the deltoid caps the shoulder laterally, while the biceps brachii occupies the anterior compartment and contrasts the extensor mass posteriorly. Distally, the triceps muscle bellies converge into the common triceps tendon, which tracks toward the olecranon of the ulna, with the radius and ulna providing bony context in the forearm. Depth is the point. Clinically, this medial perspective clarifies why the medial head can remain active even when superficial triceps contours are obscured, and it helps when teaching selective weakness patterns after radial nerve injury. The medial head lies close to the humerus near the radial groove, and its relationship to the posterior compartment explains extension deficits seen with midshaft humeral fractures and the relative preservation of some elbow extension when proximal branches to triceps are spared.
