Description
Posterior surface anatomy of the male upper arm centers on the triceps brachii, with emphasis on the lateral head lying lateral to the long head and forming the outer contour between the posterior deltoid superiorly and the olecranon region inferiorly. Beneath the subcutaneous layer, the lateral head wraps along the posterolateral humerus and converges distally with the medial and long heads into the common triceps tendon inserting on the olecranon of the ulna. Medially, the long head tracks from the infraglenoid tubercle toward the tendon, while the posterior deltoid caps the shoulder superior and lateral; slips of trapezius and latissimus dorsi frame the scapular and posterior axillary regions. Surface landmarks matter here. Clinically, the lateral head is a practical guide to the course of the radial nerve and profunda brachii artery as they pass in the radial (spiral) groove on the posterior humerus, typically deep to the lateral head and between lateral and medial heads, a relationship that explains neuropraxia after midshaft humeral fractures. Posterior and posterolateral approaches to the humerus and elbow also rely on recognizing the triceps mass and its lateral border, whether splitting the triceps or working between the lateral head and anconeus to reach the distal humerus while protecting the radial nerve proximally and the ulnar nerve medially. Overuse tendinopathy and partial tearing near the olecranon insertion can be mapped back to this line of pull during resisted elbow extension. Use this posterior view in gross anatomy labs when teaching compartmental organization of the arm, in orthopedic or sports medicine texts describing humeral fracture patterns and radial nerve risk zones, and in patient education materials explaining triceps strains or tendon injury after a fall on an extended elbow.
