Description

Running along the ulnar side of the wrist, the ulnar (carpal) collateral ligament is shown extending from the ulnar styloid process toward the medial carpal row, blending with the capsule of the radiocarpal and ulnocarpal joints. An anterior perspective keeps the palmar carpal bones in view, including the pisiform and hamate region, with the proximal metacarpals and phalanges aligned distally. The ligament sits medial to the carpal articular surfaces (rendered in blue), framing the ulnar boundary of the wrist while the metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints continue distally in the same plane. Orientation is clear. Ulnar is medial in anatomical position. Clinically, this structure matters whenever ulnar-sided wrist pain follows a fall on an outstretched hand or a forced radial deviation injury, where sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament can coexist with injury to the triangular fibrocartilage complex and distal radioulnar joint instability. An anterior view also supports teaching the relationship of the ligament’s ulnar styloid origin to nearby landmarks used during examination and imaging, including the ulnar fovea region and the pisiform as a palpable guide on the palmar side.
