Presented from an anterior perspective, the mid-thoracic vertebral bodies sit in the midline with an intervertebral disc interposed, while paired ribs (costae) sweep laterally from the thoracic cage in gentle arcs. Each vertebra’s transverse processes project laterally toward the rib angles, and the superior and inferior articular facets align vertically to form the zygapophysial joints. Rib shafts curve anterolaterally away from the vertebral column, framing the thorax on both sides. Bony texture and the cartilaginous disc are rendered with enough contrast to separate cortical margins from the softer intervertebral space. Anterior thoracic spine anatomy is often taught posteriorly, so an anterior view helps clarify what the vertebral body contributes to load transmission and how rib attachment stabilizes the thoracic segment compared with the cervical or lumbar regions. This relationship matters in flexion-compression injuries and osteoporotic vertebral body collapse, where anterior wedging alters thoracic kyphosis and can change rib spacing and chest wall mechanics.
