Description

Anterior frontal sectioning of the male skull frames the zygomatic bone (malar, cheekbone) at the inferolateral margin of the orbit, where it meets the frontal bone at the frontozygomatic suture and the maxilla at the zygomaticomaxillary suture. Laterally, the temporal process of the zygomatic bone projects posteriorly toward the zygomatic process of the temporal bone, forming the anterior portion of the zygomatic arch. Medial to the zygoma, the section plane exposes the nasal cavity with the ethmoid and sphenoid components highlighted, situating the cheekbone against the deeper midline cranial base. A frontal section is the cleanest way to teach how a superficially palpable buttress relates to the orbit and paranasal region. Zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures often propagate along the infraorbital rim and lateral orbital wall, so seeing the zygomatic bone in continuity with the maxilla and frontal bone helps explain malar flattening, infraorbital nerve hypoesthesia, and diplopia from orbital volume change. Sutural lines matter. Use this artwork for head and neck anatomy blocks, dental and maxillofacial surgery teaching files, and radiology correlation when orienting coronal CT of the midface and sinuses to surface landmarks. It also fits well in textbooks or patient-facing surgical consent material for zygomatic fracture repair and orbital reconstruction. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
