Description
Zygomatic margin of the greater wing of the sphenoid (ala major ossis sphenoidalis) forms a serrated articular edge that meets the zygomatic bone at the sphenozygomatic suture. From a lateral orbital and temporal perspective, this border sits anterolaterally on the greater wing, anterior to the squamous temporal bone and superior to the infratemporal surface that contributes to the roof of the infratemporal fossa. The adjacent orbital surface of the greater wing lies medial to the zygomatic bone and helps define the lateral wall of the orbit, while the temporal surface faces laterally into the temporal fossa. A sharp, irregular suture line is the focus. This junction matters in midface trauma, where zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures can propagate into the lateral orbital wall and disrupt the sphenozygomatic articulation, contributing to diplopia, enophthalmos, or widening of the lateral orbital rim. Craniofacial and oculoplastic approaches that use the lateral orbital rim as an entry corridor, including lateral orbitotomy and zygomatic osteotomies, rely on a precise mental map of how the greater wing locks to the zygomatic bone and how close this margin sits to the superior orbital fissure region posteriorly.
