Description

Seen in anterior view, the temporal bone is oriented to emphasize the tympanomastoid fissure, a narrow cleft separating the tympanic part (forming the anterior and inferior walls of the external acoustic meatus) from the mastoid part posteroinferiorly. The sequence tracks the fissure as it runs inferior to the external acoustic meatus and toward the region of the mastoid process, maintaining clear anterior, posterior, and inferior landmarks as the camera subtly shifts. Neighboring contours of the squamous part superiorly and the zygomatic process anterolaterally provide bony reference points as the cleft is isolated. For otologic anatomy, this junction matters because it sits at the interface of the external auditory canal and mastoid portion of the temporal bone, precisely where subtle seams and fissures can complicate interpretation of temporal bone CT and intraoperative orientation. Small changes in angle can make this fissure appear to open or disappear against the meatal rim, so the animated anterior perspective clarifies how the tympanic plate relates to the mastoid surface and why the cleft should not be mistaken for a fracture line. Expect a clean demonstration of how the fissure’s position remains consistently inferior to the meatus while the surrounding surfaces change with viewing angle. Bone only. Use this animation in gross anatomy labs covering the skull, in ENT teaching modules on external auditory canal and mastoid surface anatomy, and in radiology education when discussing normal sutures and fissures versus temporal bone trauma. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
