Description
Rising along the right lateral abdomen, the ascending colon is shown extending superiorly from the cecum toward the hepatic flexure beneath the inferior surface of the liver. The segment sits lateral to the small-intestinal mesentery and typically tracks along the right paracolic gutter, with its anterior surface related to the anterior abdominal wall and its posterior aspect apposed to retroperitoneal fascia. Superiorly, the colon turns sharply at the right colic (hepatic) flexure to become the transverse colon. Orientation is upright. For teaching large-bowel topography, this right-sided segment matters because it is usually secondarily retroperitoneal, a detail that explains both its relative fixation and the surgical planes encountered during a right hemicolectomy. Lateral mobilization along the white line of Toldt and dissection in the correct embryologic plane help protect retroperitoneal structures such as the right ureter and gonadal vessels, and guide safe control of the ileocolic and right colic vessels when present. A common clinical thread is carcinoma of the right colon, which can present late with iron-deficiency anemia and may require en bloc resection that includes the hepatic flexure and adjacent mesocolon.
