Description
Radiographic sectional anatomy of the male neck frames the larynx from the hyoid bone superiorly to the cricoid cartilage inferiorly, with the thyroid cartilage forming the anterior wall and the hypopharynx and prevertebral soft tissues lying posteriorly. As the animation advances through sequential slices, a localized soft-tissue mass is identified within the laryngeal lumen and adjacent paraglottic space, displacing the true vocal fold and narrowing the glottic airway. The epiglottis, arytenoid cartilages, and cricoarytenoid joints provide orientation as the tumor is tracked in cranio-caudal progression and its margins are contrasted against normal aerated laryngeal spaces. Airway compromise is evident. Laryngeal carcinoma most often presents with progressive hoarseness when the lesion involves the true vocal cord, but supraglottic or subglottic extension can declare itself through dysphagia, stridor, or aspiration as edema and mass effect distort the laryngeal inlet. Animated radiographic sequencing clarifies what single-frame teaching often misses: the relationship of tumor bulk to the anterior commissure, the pre-epiglottic and paraglottic fat planes, and the subglottic airway, all features that influence T-staging and operative planning. Tracking the lesion across planes also supports discussion of regional spread patterns, including level II to IV cervical nodes and prelaryngeal (Delphian) nodal involvement.
